BETH HAMEDRASH KNESSET YEHEZKEL SYNAGOGUE, GOLDERS GREEN

London

This is a design and build contract that involved the removal of a pair of a semi-detached houses which had operated as a synagogue, and the construction of a new synagogue building with a basement. In order to get the maximum benefit from the site, a double level basement has been created set to the total boundary perimeter, and then a three-storey building has been formed above ground level, in a similar position to the original houses.

The fit out involved all new services including air conditioning and ventilation with the associated plant and equipment. The ground floor is the main synagogue with a prayer room adjacent, and a ladies’ gallery formed at the first floor level also with a prayer room off it. Stone slabs were laid to the ground floor and wall stones to the entrance and synagogue. These were all imported from Israel. The synagogue was then fitted out by a specialist company from Israel who provided the religious requirements, as well as the bookcases, seating and benches.

The basement area has paneled walls, with the mezzanine providing Ladies and Gents rooms. The main area of the basement provides a double-storey open space to allow a dancing and seating area, and finally a kitchen.
